A “SPOOK”

REMARKABLE EXPERIENCE FAMILY DISTURBED THE GHOST OP A SAILOR (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Four weeks ago a family consisting of the parents and two children, a hoy and gill, 14 and 12 years of age, living in a five-roomed house at Island Bay, were startled by peculiar sounds coming from the roof or ceiling. At first the noises were put down to the wind, hut when they were repeated on a calm night, birds or cats were alternative suggestions. On the noises increasing any varying in location, rind examination of the house was made and revealed no apparent cause. The idea of a ‘’spook" was raised, and experiments to establish a- code with the spirits had a startling result. The noises increased greatly, apparently from all over the place, a latched door was flung open without human aid. and a draught of cold air swept the room. This manifestation was too much for the family, who spent the night under the hospitable roof of a neighbour. The wife and children were sent to the country, and the owner of the house, a clerk in the city, took advice to calling in the aid ot a lady clairvoyant, a visitor from New Plymouth. A seance was arranged, and the clairvoyant, declared that she got into contact with the disturber, who said lie was a sailor, and gave the name of George Heuslow. who had been drowned off Island Bay in 1809. owing to the capsize of a whaling bont.« He was worried about a lady named Mabel or Mary—-ho was uncertain which—with whom lie had left a bundle. The “spook” apparently gate no further identification. Since then the noises have stopped. The owner thinks, however, that the “spook” may return, lie has found a tenant willing to take the house, “spook” and all, and prefers himself to live elsewhere.
