LORD STANLEY EXPLAINS
EMPIRE TRADE RELATIONS REMARKS MISUNDERSTOOD (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, Obtober 4. Lord Stanley, writing to the Morning Past, says: " Your article attributed to me opinions fdo not hold. Hud 1. expressed the opinion that trade be tween this country and Australia was a twopenny halfpenny affair 1 should indeed deserve censure, properly given. In comparing the exports of manufactured articles of England with those of Australia I used the somewhat rhetorical expression that they were in comparison twopenny halfpenny, but I at once added that perhaps this expression was indiscreet. The phrase, divorced from its context, has apparently been distorted. # trust my ■friends in Australia will not think [ am so foolish as to minimise the importance of business relations between our two countries."
