SHORTER HOURS
WITHOUT LOWER WAGES AMERICAN LABOR PLEDGE FIVE DAY WEEK BATTLE (Eke. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.l (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) NEW YORK, Oct. 4. Mr Green, president cf the American, Federation of Labor, announced at Detroit that I lie sixteenth convention of the Federation opening there to-day will pledge itself on behalf of the live day week For industry with a heavier output and without a decrease of wages. He said : "-It is not our purpose to establish a shorter week at the cost of wages. We cannot get it without a corresponding increase m productivity. We will get a shorter week as industry is ready lor it. The mining and building trades, the garment, manna;turing and automobile industries are ready. The increase in productivity comes because of the. high pressure under which those, employed trork, more efficient methods, and standardisation. The eonsequent strain demands shorter hours. If men are worked too long at a high speed at monotonous tasks, they will not stay on the job, and the result will he a lieavy loss to employers through excessive labor turnover.
