BENEFICIAL RAIN

CLOSE ON AN INCH BOON TO THE FARMERS The rain which has fallen throughout the district during the last three days will prove of jnestinia table benefit tb the farmers, and it is hard to calculate the financial gain which will accrue, through the steady warm rain which has been so general. The district had reached a stage when fanners wo.ve viewing the remainder of the season in a very pessimistic manner, for they were convinced that another season such as was experienced last year was likely. The rain has, therefore, come, at the most opportune time, and besides benefiting the ground itself, it will assist in giving a more optimistic feeling to the. whole of the farming community. There were many farmers who were wanting to plant crops last week, who were afraid to do so because they could not work up their ground properly, and also because they could not expect the seeds to germinate. Ploughs ..will be working overtime this week for the warm rain has improved conditions immeasurably. The time for the planting of the early maize is now nearly at hand and with well soaked ground and a warm spell this should get away well. The showers were just exactly what were needed, and it is interesting to know that although the rain was not particularly heavy, close, on an inch of rain has fallen in the past three days. On Friday 23 points were registered, on Saturday there were nine points, while yesterday ;molher 4B points fell, making the total rainfall for the present month 80 points.
