ANOTHER ATTEMPT
TO OUST UPPER HOUSE DETERMINED LABORITE "DEFEATED BY TREACHERY" SYDNEY, October 3. Speaking at the annual Light Hour Day dinner, the Premier, Mr. Lang forcshawoded another attempt to get rid of the-Legislative Council. .Referring to the movements in connection with legislative achievements, he said: — "Begarding the latter, we were beaten by The council, which grew desperate and began to show its teeth when it fouud it was backed by the Governor of the State. ' Our efforts were defeated by the treachery and cunning of men mesquerading' as Laborites, who secured seats in the Legislative Council upon a written pledge to vote for its abolition, but I am determined that the issue shall not be allowed to die. This'antiquated legislative relic of mediacvalism must be wiped out. It belongs to an age _ of privilege, patronage and prerogative, and has no place in the modem democratic scheme of government. The autocratic powers of the Governor must also he made a burning question. We must insist upon the righs of people to rule through their elected representatives without interference from either local or imported nominees." eDaling with the recent attempt to depose him from the party leadership Mr. Lang said: "The Parliamentary situation is distinctly unsatisfactory. The attempt to supplant mo came as a surprise." Ho said he did not relish assassination within his own party, but when the movement thought ho had ceased to Function with energy, honesty, and courage he would accept, the verdict without a, murmur. He strongly appealed for a closer union in the Labor party.
