STARTLED SCIENTISTS

VITAMINES NOT ESSENTIAL TO ANIMALS. LONDON, Aug. 22. In view of the general'acceptance of the theorv that vitamiues are essential to the health of man and animals, the British Association was somewhat startled to-day when a paper was submitted by Sir Arnold Theiler. Dr H. H. Green and the late Mr. P. J. du Toit describing experiments with the object of determining the physiological minimum requirements for cattle of phosphorus, calcium, sodium, potassium and chlorine, which declared that one of the outstanding features of thc( experiment was that alt animals which received sufficient phosphorus throve despite a practically entire absence of vitamiues in their diet. Two heifers which had a daily ration of green forage did not develop any better than the others. The conclusion has somewhat justified the view that the vitaraino re tuiirements of cattla are negligible.
