WAIKOKOPU RAILWAY
MORE FREIGHT WANTED "BOAT RATES TOO HIGH" (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this i'.ny. Although the people of the district regard W'aikokopu harbor as being gcncrallv satisfactory, little Height is being sent backwards and forwards through, that port. This has resulted in the'railway being poorly supported, and in order "to get importers to make fuller use of tin' railway the department arranged for a visit from Mr. Marshall, of the. commercial branch. It was arranged that ho was to moot the importers in the County Council chambers on Friday, but there was no one present, the importers not faking a "•reat deal of interest in the project. Mr Marshall later met the principal importers and discussed the position with them in an endeavor to try and meet them in their difficulties. SEA CARRIAGE. Speaking to a Herald representative on 'Saturday, Mr. Marshall said that importers were unanimous m their opinion that it: was the high freight rates to port Waikokopu that were responsible for the lack >A support. 11 these could be reduced it would, be possible for them to make use of Waikokopu and the railway would receive the benefit. Freight rates to Wairoa were very high, but recently reductions were made in the freights to the river port, these having Hen sufficient, to induce importers to got their goods sent, to the river instead „r to Waikokopu. Mr Marshall s tated that^it was generally agreed that Waikokopu was the most satisfactory pot nml that the importers would gladly make use of it provided the heavj freights were reduced.
