GOGH ET BEATS TILDEN. FINEST FEAT OF SEASON. OTHER FRENCH SUCCESSES. (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) NEW YORK. Sept. lii. At Forest Hills m the Quarter National singles final to-day. Cochet defeated Tilden, 6—S, 6—l, 6—3, I—6, 5 6. Richards defeated Briignon, 6—2, 6 6—2. Lacosle defeated Williams, 6—o, 6—:;, s—6. Borotra defealed Johnston. Cochet. in defeating Tilden, accomplished probably the finest feat of. the present tennis season. His tennis was so superb that, irrespective of the American’s handicap, due to a twisted knee, it can be said that the Frenchman won and earned his points, since, throughout, Tilden was playing well and covering the ground miraculously, despite his injury. Ho forgot his knee and his “gets’’ showed him at his best, but Cochet was accurate, deadly at the net. and played his game to the utmost. The Frenchman, after leading the American 4—l in the fifth sot, seemed unable to stem Tilden’s vicious attack, which brought the American up to 4—4, but Cochet proved irresistible, smashing his way through and winning the last three points on placements. It is the eighth time that Tilden has been defeated tins year, but the only time when he arfuaily could not win. Observers nmv believe, since, it is the first time that Tilden has been dethroned as the singles champion in seven years, that the Frenchman will have an excellent chance of winning the title.
