TO RESIGN ON MONDAY
MEIGHEN GOVERNMENT SEQUEL TO ELECTION (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) OTTAWA. Sept. lfi. It wits officially announced to-day that the Mcighen Government would tender its resignation on Monday. Mr. William Lyon Mackenzie King, whom the electors of Canada have returned to power, first attained the Premiership of Canada, at the age of 47 years, after he had been in politics for over 20 years. His rise to that, office was predicted by Lord Grey when Gov-ernor-General of Canada. ‘‘Watch that young man, Mackenzie King,” he said. "Some say lie will be in Sir Wilfrid Lauvier’s place.” Sir Wilfrid lnmself had a great- admiration for his voting lieutenant, and prophetically saw in him a future leader of the Liberal Party of the Dominion.
Mr. King comes from a family which has an historic place m Canada’s history. His grandfather, Williqm Lyon .Mackenzie, .a Scottish-Canadian, was an ardent reformer and led an abortive rebellion against the Government of the day. The grandson, a. Canadian first and foremost, is a, firm believer in the British Empire and never hesitates to give expression to his belief. A graduate of Toronto University, lie has the tastes of a scholar, and was one’ of the first Canadians to specialise in sociology and industrial problems. His book, “ln'tduotry and Humanity,” shows a keenly sympathetic and wide-visioned grasp of the relationship between Capital and Libor, and it was fitting that he should first have come into prominence of the public life of Canada in the capacity of Deputy Minister, and later as Minister of Labor in the Laurier Administration. His outstanding success was' in the operation of the Lemieua Act, under which a strike or lock-out cannot be declared before -the dispute has been brought to arbitration.*-
