LABOR CONFERENCE
LOWERING SOCIAL STATUS AUSTRALIA NOT IMPRESSED (Eke. Tol. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received September 18. noon) SYDNEY, September 18. Mr. Beasley, Australia')! trade union representative, at the Geneva Labor Conference. on his return to Australia, said the conference was in many respects a failure. There was a tendency to make seamen’s conditions worse, instead of improving them. Instead of doing the work it. was appointed to do. the conference. appeared to do the direct opposite. instead of lifting the weaker countries of the world towards the same social status as the more advanced countries, the latter were being forced to adopt, lower standards. Ah'. Beasley was disappointed with the calibre of the Labor representatives he met during his travels, both British and foreign. lie thinks they lack initiative and foresight, and enthusiasm for the cause of the workers.
