Prior jo the rush to tho new Elamlsputte diamond field mounted police swept twelve square miles of country to clear the ground. Approximately 10,000 diggers assembled seven and eight deep, starting ip line', which was one and a-hnlf miles long. They were clad in a variety of costumes from running fogs lo Oxford lings. Tho great rush, which was accompanied by a hoarse roar from thousands of throats, and clouds of dust, was witnessed by 10,000 spectators.
