The following distress signal was received from the steamer .Manaia by the Wellington Radio Station at 11.35 last night: "S.O.S. Manaia on Slipper Mocks." Kurt her messages stated the captain thought the vessel would be O.K. (ill tho morning, but he desired assistance to be sent at once for the passengers. The M'aiiaia left Tauraiiga a I 8 p.m., and struck at 11.20 p.m. At 2.30 a.m. it was reported by wireless that she was holding on to the reef with her propellors. and that the passengers were still on board. The weather was squally and (he seas moderate, but the vessel was bumping heavily. An earlier message stated it was intended to land the passengers, hut according to the latest advice this had not been done. The Ngapuhi, en route from Whangarei to Auckland, is proceeding to the Manaia's assistance. The Rimil is leaving Auckland at 9 a.m. BOATS STANDING BY. AUCKLAND, this day. The Star's Tnirua correspondent telegraphs : " The, Manaia. is about one mile off Slipper Island, and is well up on a reef behind a small rocky island. 1 can see a two-masted scow standing by. A Northern Co.'s steamer' has just arrived (10.15 a.m.).' 'The Manaia. is keeping her stem up. " The sea is moderate. The wen'.her is getting calmer. It is dull and cloudy, but is clearing. Ngapuhi was turned off her course to pick up the Mapaia's passengers, who boarded the steamer named in safety, and are on the way to Auckland. The, Manaia went ashore on the southern end of the island. The s.s. Clansman leaves Auckland tonight to take up the Manaia's running. 'llm Matangi is at present undergoing' annual overhaul.

TRANSFERENCE OP PASSENGERS

WELLINGTON, ibis day. Radio messages to the Secretary of the General Post Oflice state that the steamer Ngapuhi was communicated, with at 3 o'clock this morning. The weather was then coming up and the Manaia was making water fairly fast. About 60 passengers were aboard. At 10.44 o'clock this morning, a further radio message stated: " 10.20 a.m., from Manaia, Ngapuhi now taking passengers oil". Two boats away safely."

ON CISRORNE RUN FOR A TIME

The .Manaia was built at Dumbarton by Messrs. VV. Denny Bros, in 1898, and is a steel twin-screw steamer of 1159 tons. She then carried Ihe Union .Steamship Cb.'s Hag, under the name of the ttotoiti, and was for sonic years engaged in the Nelson and West Coast trade. On being taken over by the Northern Steamship Co, she was renamed the Manaia, On dune 3, 1921, she was chartered by Ihe Onion .Steamship Co. for the Auckland-Oisborne-Napier service during the time the Arahura was undergoing survey and overhaul, and was engaged on that run until July 14 of (he same year. On being returned to the Northern Co., she was placed en the Aticiiland-Whangarei run. She was recently transferred to the Tiiurati'/a ser-vice-to temporarily replace the Malangi during the hitter's overhaul.
