RESCUE AT SEA. MAURETANIA'S DASH. NEW YORK, April 1. Captain Rostron, who commanded the Carpathia when she rescued some of the Titanic survivors, lias sent by wireless a dramatic account of the Mauretania's dash in her attempt to rescue the I.aleham's crew. "At 3.25 on Wednesday afternoon we received an 5.0. N., stating that the LalcJiam was on her beam ends, » with her bunkers and stokeholds Hooded, and the water gaining. She! was carrying barley from Newport News, hut the cargo, becoming wet,' had swelled and burst out everywhere.
"The Maurelania then was facing a north-west gale and a, high sea. I immediately turned, and we, attempted to work up a speed of 30 miles an' hour, hoping to reach them at midnight. "At 5 o'clock we got- a message from Iho British tanker Khirvan, saying she then was only 20 miles from the Laleham, whose side she reached at 6.30. "Two hours later wo received word from the Shirvan that she had effected the rescue, and was taking the survivors to Falmouth. The Laleham was set afire, and with her seacocks open would sink in three hours' Every' one of her crew of 37 was saved. Bravo, Shirvan!"'
