DASH FOR SAFETY.
MOLTEN SLAG HITS WATER. lUIP. MAN'S STORY. NEWCASTLE. April 7. The mystery of the 8.1i.P. explosion* shortly after midnight, on Mon % day, has an' explanation in tho story related by a steel works shift employee to-day. . ; ' He says that with other men in the open hearth department he is lucky to have escaped serious injury. There- were wild and exciting scenes following the explosion. Nearly 200 men were thrown into complete darkness, and, running in all directions for safety, they just'fell over one another.
He.'explains that a big quantity of molten slag was being' cleared from one of the ftwnacos on the open hearth. During this operation a tap-hole is opened, and the slag falls about, 15 to 20ft. to a big hollow in a ladle-stand. On this occasion there was a good deal of water in the hollow, and as soon as the slag hit, it there was a loud explosion. Immediately after, the volume of dirt, sine, and steam in the air was so dense that, it-was impossible to see more than a few feet ahead.
