HOCKEY.
The Poverty B;iv hockey season was, opened yesterday, whjen two games in the nien's division were played. The early inauguration of the men’s competition is due to the desire of the Association to give players plenty of practice, 1 and to observe the form of the various prospective representative players, in view of the forthcoming visit of the Indian Army team. The two matches played served at least to demonstrate how necessary it is that training should be keenly prosecuted. The grounds were in splendid order, and both games were played at a Tost pace. DEPENCE (4) BEAT GARRISON (0). The Defence team proved too strong for their opponents, the forwards running over them with ease on occasions. Garrison put up a good fight, but it was evident that, training under a good coach would make all the difference to their combination. For the winning team Nicol and East scored in the first half, and Nicol and McDonald in the second. Henderson and Bpusfield wore the referees. KIWI (3) REAT FORESTERS (0). Foresters were expected to give Kiwi a very level game and actually there was not as much between the two teams as is indicated by the scores. The whole of the first spell yielded no score, though there were many exciting episodes in each circle. 1 During the second half the Kiwis pressed consistently, and their opponents felt keenly the absence of their captain, Fitzmaurico, who was last year a tower of strength in the matter of rush-stopping. Duncan and Piesse each scored for Kiwis during this half, Piesse netting a couple of goals. Messrs. Henderson and Olsen refereed the match.
