The fact, flint the Wairoa bar has been blocked for 75 days to ali vessels hut the tender Til Atu. has brought the Board up to the point of taking some action to end a most intolerable situation.
At the Board meeting on Tuesday. Messrs Richardson and t 'o. wrote'• drawingl attention to the manner in which shipping was being hampered by the bad stale of the bin - , and suggesting that, some action was necessary foe the betterment of the existing conditions. Mr Cork ill said the matter was one of great importance to the whole district, and it was about time the Board took steps to purchase a sand pump to keep the channel straight, especially now that, electricity was available. He moved to obtain all the particulars possible in regard; to such a plant. Mr Browne said 1 a contractor, Mr Latham, had told him a sand pump would clear out a. channel in four hours and need not- be closer to the bar than 20 feet.
Mr Carroll also spoke strongly in favor of taking some such steps, as lie claimed the river must always be the cheaper proposition as a. mode of transport- for imports, whilst Waikokopu would be useful as a, stand-by and for meat export. After some discussion on. freights via Wairoa, Waikokopu, by rail and: by lorry, Mr Browne seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
A committee comprising the chairman, and Messrs Carroll. Browne and Coi’kili. was set up io collect all the required information.
