The action of the Minister of Railways in introducing Hie system of round-trip tickets for the purpose of attracting tourists to the- Southern, Lakes (atys the Southland Times) has been the subject of favorable comment from time to time, and the first season’s operations of the new system are said to show very encouraging results, a. recent return prepared by tiie Railway Department showing that a sum of £SOOO has been derived from the sale of such tickets’. In addition to that amount the Tourist Offices have also- issued a- large number of these tickets. A moderate estimate of the number of people who have taken advnii (age during the present season of the privileges afforded, according to one of Die officials, would he between 1800 and 2CUO.
