THE MAKING OF -\ HARBOR. As a trading centre. Timaru occupies a splendid geographical position. Situated midway between LytU'llon and Dunedin, it is the logical outlet for the produce of a vast area of country stretching from the Wa.itaki River to Ashbur■ton, and from the Southern .Alps to the sea. The harbor-, which is capable of accommodating the largest _ ocean-going .steamers visiting the Dominion, is rated as one of the tinest artificial harbors in Australia and New Zealand, and is equipped with every facility for the speedy handling of cargo. Thus Timaru has all the essentials necessary to make it, in the not distant future, one of the Dominion's mast prosperous ports. Since the harbor works were first commenced in 1878 by the construction of the eastern mole, the progress of the port has been remarkable. The harbor revenue in that year amounted to £1788; in 1924 it was £49,972, a record for the port. - The valuation of the harbor district increased from £7,308,540 in ICM to £l9-JJ05,712 last year. Up-to-date as that port already is, the Timaru Harbor Board has not lost eight of the fact, that it must he farther enlarged and improved in order to keep pace with the. growing needs of the district arrd to handle the rapidly increasing trade.
