HIGH POWER WIRELESS.
GOVERNMENT SEEKS LATEST INFORMATION.
AUCKLAND, Nov. 25,
The Government is adopting a cautious policy before embarking on an expensive scheme of erecting a highpowered wireless station in the Dominion capable of engaging commercially in overseas communication. The Prime Minister intimated yesterday that nothing further had transpired since the Government decided six or seven months ago to defer the whole question, lii view of the fact that important discoveries and changes were taking place in the world of wirclcsk, especially as regards intercommunication between countries, it was considered safest for the Dominion to hold its hand for twelve months or so.
It. was quite possible that we were 011 the eve of n discovery that would make international communication much cheaper than it was to-day and render existing high-powered wireless equipment obsolete, said Mr, Coates. The Government vas maintaining a close watch on the trend of events, and the whole question would be reconsidered later in the light of information now being obtained. In view of the Government ’s decision it was useless speculating as to the merits or otherwise of particular sites. New Zealand possessed ideal sources of cheap power in her hydro-electric schemes, and a station operated from Arapitni would undoubtedly be among the alternatives to be considered when a national scheme came to be formulated.
