SUPERMEN ONLY?
HARD MIGRANT TESTS. MAJORITY CAN’T PASS. LONDON, Oct. 11. —Wholesale rejections of intending emigrants to Australia, are resulting in widespread criticism of the methods employed. The Parliamentary Secretary for the Dominions (the Earl of Clarendon), accompanied by Mr. Mc : Nnughton (chairman) and other members of flic Oversea Settlement. Committee, the High Commissionin' (Sir Joseph Cook) and local members of Parliament, will examine the method of selection of 200 applicants at Liverpool on October 20. Tho Sun’s special representative has been informed that the Earl of Clarendon desires to ascertain personally whether Australia wants only supermen or whether tho rejections aro justified. Rejections range between 50 and 85 per cent, of applicants, who include young men suffering from malnutrition due to early under-feeding, war-time rationing, aiid after-war economic depression. Somo aro rejected for slight defects of eyesight or hearing, others for having had malaria., and one man because lie bad lost a.'fingertip, though ho was otherwise physically lit. Occasionally men are rejected 1 at the final inspection. Olio man was rejected when ho was on board’ a ship ready to sail.
