GENERAL ELECTIONS.
Rome of Miss Melville’s audience at Auckland the other evening tired of asking questions which the candidate easily answered. A man .who probably thought he was making a killing shot by asking, the candidate if she was in favor of the Singapore base got the shock of his life. “ Vos, lam in favor of the Singapore base,” said Miss Melville. “As a matter of fact, I visited Singapore last year and made some personal observations.” MINISTER’S RETURNING VIGOR. Although the Hon. W. Downic Stewart remained seated while he addressed the electors of Dunedin West, there was nothing suggestive of the invalid in either the delivery of his speech or in the matter which it contained. The Otago Daily Times says: “In clear tones, so that, not n syllable of what he said was missed by his audience, Mr. Stewart spoke vigorously and breezily and the vein of humor of which he ’makes skilful play was effectively developed by him. He was able to confirm the statement that the reports of his medical advisers are so favorable that he hopes before the end of the year to be restored to a jjhysican condition superior to any that lie has enjoyed for years.”
