BY ROAD TO TARANAKI.

A CONSUL’S IMPRESSIONS. “LAND OF PLUTOCRATS.” NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. “When 1 came through your rich fertile country I thought that surely this must be a land of plutocrats. 1 could not conceive that with a country so rich, so fertile, and so beautiful you could have any humble toilers. I thought you must all he millionaires.” This is tho impression that North Taranaki has made upon Mr Walter K. Boyle, Consul for the United States of America at Auckland, who made his first trip away from Auckland when he accompanied the Savage Club on a visit to New Plymouth at the end of last week.

Speaking of the trip to New Plymouth Mr Boyle was generous in his praise of the beauties of the Awakino Valley and Mount Messenger, hut what impressed him most concerning the main north road was the fact that such a splendid highway had been built by a country having a population of only a little over a million. “It is a splendid achievement,” he said, “and it shows that yours is indeed a rich and enterprising country.” Mr Boyle extolled the view of the surrounding country from the .slopes of Mount Egmont, and bis advice was to capitalise the mountain as a scenic resort.
