PROTECTION FOR ARTISTS.
• —«*- (Reuter's Telegram.) - LONDON, June 27. The House of Commons, by 12.1 votes to :10, carried the third reading of a private member’s Bill entitled "The Dramatic and Musical Performers’ Protection Bill.” The object is to prevent the production of unauthorised gramophone records of performances and broadcasts by artistes.
Sir M. 'Conway explained that, at present, it was not advisable for firstclass artists to perform for broadcasting, because the performance could be token down by a gramophone receiver and a gramophone negative made from which records could be produced tor sale, which would result, in the breaking of contracts between artists and gramophone companies. The Bill would help to improve broadcast programmes. 'flic Government supported the Bill.
