DRESSES ON APPROVAL.
YOUNG WOMAN IN'COURT,
The custom of allowing an article out on approval is involved in a theft charge preferred against a young woman in the Magistrate’e Court, Christchurch. Tho young woman was charged with the theft at Wellington of three dresses, the property of To Aro House., , Chief-Detective Gibson asked for a remand to Wellington on July I. Mr J, B. Batchelor, who appeuYeir for tho accused, asked for bail and the suppression of the nlfme. He said the young woman was a member of a touring theatrical company. . She had got jierself into her present position through n mistaken idea on the part of the firm concerned as to what constituted a criminal act or civil debt. 1 Site had gone to the shop and obtained three dresses oin approval. Two of these were for a friend. She returned her drees and loft for Christchurch, but the other woman assured her that she would return the two dresses or pay for them. Apparently Hie/ drensee were not teturned and tlie young woman was arrested.
Chief-Detective Gibson said the statement made was not quite correct. /The woman had obtained throo dresses cm approval, kept two. and sent one back with a note, saying that she would can in and pay for the dressep kept, -She did not call in and disappeared from Wellington. “She is just moving about the country,” he said. “Sim is following a theatrical company. She was only arrested a few minutes ago. The warrant was issued from Wellington.” Mr Batchelor; That is so. She is a
New Zealander, but lias no relatives bore. The company, lias an engagement in Wellington next week.
The Bench suppressed the name and remanded the accused, bail being allowed in self £25 and cnei surety of £25.
