TOKOMARU BAY AMATEUR HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the above society was held in To I’uka Hall on Thursday afternoon. Present: Mesdames Carroll, Grant, Johnson, and Whitmore, Miss\ Jackson, Messrs W. Gates, scnr., Taylor, Todd, lloluh, and S\ J. Plummer, lion, secretary. Mr Gates was voted to the chair.

The annual balance-sheet was read, also the following report: —Your committee have the honor to submit tlie following report: During, the past year three shows have been 1 held as usual. All three shows were fairly successful, and compared favorably financially with past years. Owing to the unsuitable season and weather conditions, the entries for the autumn show were below normal, especially in the vegetable classes. The society’s thanks are due to those ladies and gentlemen who presented sweets for sale and prizes for guessing competitions to augment the funds. It will be necessary to find someone to take the secretaryship, as Capt. Fluminen finds he will'not be able to act this yehr, and hands in his resignation from to-day, but will be delighted to assist the society in any way possible. The society’s thanks are due to the Tolaga Bay ladies who very kindly and ably assisted in the judging •at all three shows during the past year, and also under difficulties of transport made numerous entries at our show, and were very successful, Mrs Scammel holding the bulb cup for the year, and Mrs Loisel, juniy, tieiug with Miss Busby for the rose howl. Your committee consider that when possible out- ; side judges should be asked to judge a.t shows, and suggest that the judges for next year should he picked from northern'residents, with the exception of Mr l'\ C. Bull, whom we trust will he with us for many more shows. During the year a very successful ball was held to raise money to build a shed to store the society’s tables, etc., in. The net proceeds, £l4 13s d, just covered the cost of the shed. Owing to the unsuitable position of the shed it is not so useful as anticipated, and more facilities are yet required for exhibitors to prepare their exhibits for the show, especially in wet weather. Your committee consider that old bottles are not desirable as vases, and it should be the endeavor of the society during the next year to .raise enough money to obtain at least 12 dozen, suitable nun-breakable vases. At presen .we have six dozen zitio and four dozen china vases. We think the present arrangement of tables and forms could he improved upon. It is suggested that a long form he used for cookery and fruit, like the present form ; for Section 1. All the judges, stewards, doorkeepers, and other helpers deserve the thanks of the society. We regret to state that Mr and Mrs Graham, both Willing helpers on behalf of the society, '•have loft the district. Schedules: Your committee consider that'there were far jtoo many classes: in each show, and as a result not enough competition, so a small, committee was formed to cut out a- lot of classes in the various sections This has been done, and we suggest that the committee's action he confirmed at this meeting. N We consider to class numbers should run consecutively right to the last section for each show, not start a.t 1 for each section as at present. :Tbe time of closing the entries should be printed in the schedule, and we consider should be not Inter than 9 a.m. on the day before the show. The various trophies for the year were won as follows: Vegetable cup, presented by Miss B. Bushy, Mrs, Rollover, 73 points; i junior cookery cup, presented by Mrs Beale, Jung Plummer, 86 points; •chrysanthemum cup, presented by Society, Mr Holah, 39 points (won outi right); vase, presented by Mrs G.
