PORTSMOUTH, Jan. Uk—News has been received of the disappearance at sea of Paymaster,. Lieut-Commander F. .T. H. Davies, Royal Australian Navy, who was secretary to the naval representative at. Australia House, and was not long ago given a farewell dinner by the staff there. He was a firstclass passenger in the s.s. Diogenes, and was returning to Melbourne to rejoin liis wife and family. Captain A. I). Young, of the Diogenes, wrote to Messrs. Thompson, shipping agents, of London, the following letter: “1 much regret to report that Lieut.-Commander F. J. IT. Davies, K.A.X.. first-class passenger to Melbourne, lias been missing since two p.m. yesterday, the Dili ins!. He «ivns reported to me as missing at eleven p.m., and on making inquiries I found that he was last definitely seen at about 1.90 p.m., when leaving the saloon after lunch. A thorough search of the vessel was carried out, but. without, avail. On in.ytjstigatiug the mat lor I learned that two third-class boy passengers had seen a body floats ing astern at about two p.m., but no rep6it was made to the officer of the watch at that time or afterwards.”
