UNIVERSITY SENATE.
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. At thy University Semite meeting Sir Robert, Stout moved—(l) That the registrar prepare a statement lor the Senate showing the list of universities in Great Britain in which there is provision in their charter that there must be a report from an external examiner before any degree can be granted. (2) The number of external examiners in the, universities ot Britain and Australia.. (o). The fees (if any) paid to professors "'ho act as examiners of their own students. The Hon. J. A. Hanan seconded. Professor Segar moved that the word “federal” be inserted before (universities. The conditions in many other universities yere quite different to those existing in New Zealand or Australia. ' Sir Robert Stout said lie was asking for information in regard to all universities. Professor Segar replied that the informal ion, if given in the way asked for, would! be misleading. The conditions were different. Professor'Wall moved that- the Senate proceed to business. Sir Robert Stout remarked that ho was not surprised that some members of I lie. Senate desired to suppress discus-i fiion on this matter, and to suppress the information lie bad asked for the past twelve years. There had been a continual fight on the part of professors to get the whole control of higher education in New Zealand 1 into their own hands. They had not succeeded. One of the things was that they were to examine their own pupils. It. was his desire to get tlie facts for the benefit of the Senate and the benefit of the publie* Professor Hunter suggested that the words “and internal” should be inserted before examiners. Sir Robert Stout bad 1 no objection, an<l tho amendment was agreed to. The addition of the word “federal” was negatived. - Tho motion, as amended by the insertion of tlie word Australia after Britain, was carried by 17 votes to A.
