GISBORNE BAND TOUR.

TOWNS TO BE VISITED. On the way to the band contest at Auckland the Gisborne City Band will visit a number of towns, giving concerts. The band- will travel overland, and thus will be able to play at several towns on the way through. The hand will leave Gisborne on February 20, will pla-v at Opotiki that afternoon and at Wluikatane in the evening, the first night being spent there. , O'n the 'Saturday they will play at Tau-rang-a in the afternoon and at Ivlat-amata in the evening, remaining there for the night. Auckland’ will be reached on the Sunday, and the-contest, which commences on Monday, will last the whole week. The band will return to Gisborne on Tuesday, March 3, and will thus arrive a- day sooner than if they had to wait for the boat. The hand is practising most assiduously, and every evening is spent in some form of practice. Local enthusiasts declare that the combination going away this year will be the strongest third grade band ever sentaway from Gisborne, and they should give a very creditable account of themselves. The annual contests do a greatdeal towards assisting the band to attain a high state of efficiency and for that reason, the project is worthy of every encouragement from the general public.

A certain amount of difficulty is always experienced in raising the money necessary for the trip, but this year a new departure has been made, and instead of canvassing for subscriptions, the committee is holding an art union, the first, prize of which consists of gold specie to the value of £IOO. If every person in Gisborne bought only one shilling ticket, ,)the hand would ha-ve no need to worry about the funds. The venture is being well supported, and it is anticipated that the required amount will be successfully raised.
