HOTEL ON FIRE.

CHRISTCHURCH. BLAZE EXTINGUISHED. Tlio Dominion Hotel in (Gloucester street, 'Christchurch, was threatened with destruction by tire shortly before 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. The outbreak was, however, suppressed before any very serious damage was done. The tiro had its origin in the gable of the roof in the rear portion of the building, having apparently been caused through a. defect in a, chimney. Dense smoke quickly emerged from all the ventilators on the roof, giving the suggestion that Ihe whole building was ablaze. Fortunately, however, the flames never penetrated below the ceiling of the top floor, and though a fair amount- of damage was done by water m the bedrooms, nothing was burnt- except between, the ceiling and the roof. Tile building is owned by D. Young, who was formerly the licensee of the City Hotel, He purchased the freehold a- few weeks ago for £25,C00.
