ROSE SHOW.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

The Poverty Bay Horticultural Society’s annual .rose show was concluded last evening. The City Hall was well tilled during the afternoon and evening, the attendance being larger than last year. At the conclusion ,of the show the exhibits were auctioned, the cuf flowers bringing very good prices. A flower stall did good business during the. day.

Mr. G. D. Kennedy, of Napier, who judged the rose sections,, said that, taken all round, the display of roses was a, very good one, especially when the quantity of rosc-s exhibited was taken into consideration. In New Zealand it was almost impossible to produce 36 roses of 12 dilfcrc.nl varieties, and have perfect specimens. Nevertheless that class had been excellent. The champion bloom was very good, and there had also been three very line H.T.’s. There had been only one H.P. worthy of a premier position, and) no tea roses were sufficiently good to bo awarded a championship. The principal fault lay with the staging of the exriibits. Many ol the exhibitors seemed to be under a misapprehension regarding the dressing of their exhibits. They were given lo understand that the rose should be exhibited just as it- was cut, and some exhibited roses without any foliage. He could not give points to roses without leaves. There were also too many roses unnamed. No known varieties of roses should he left, unnamed. Another fault was that many of the exhibits were incorrectly named. The* display comparer] more than favorably with those ol the bigger Hawke’s Bay shows. Mr. J. Anderson (Napier), judge of tho cut flowers section, said that it had been a most interesting one to judge. Some of the exhibits were splendid, and it would ho hard to find better nquilegias than those exhibited by Mrs. E. Loisel. Another of the. sections which lie enjoyed judging was tho cut flower section, ip which one-color flowers wore exhibited. The staging of a. selection of while flowers against a. background of blue was very effective. The exhibits in the section judged by him were equal to anything which would be seen at a flower show anywhere.
