CLEARING PESTS.
PRACTI CAL DESTRUCTIVE MEASURES. (Parliamentary Reporter.) W ELLIN GTON, this day. The member for Gisborne in his Budget speech, urged the Government to pay more practical attention to- the blackberry pest. He suggested the setting up of a, Board with sufficient authority to carry out general clearing measures and charge landowners with the cost. They could deal with lands now valueless through this pest, and recover a portion of the increased value caused by clearing it of blackberry. Thousands' of acres of land had bepn made useless, and there was great scope for such a plan. Something better ought to be done to cope with the rabbit pest, and it was advisable to give Magistrates power to order the poisoning of areas because they would never dear them. by trapping. He assured the House that the Rabbit Board in his own district was going its best with limited powers. It once sent a, man ICO miles from Taupo to ToLa,ga Bay because of a report •of signs of rabbits, “but,” bo added, amid laughter, “it turned out to be rat- holes.”
