HUNTING.
(Bv “Snaffles.”)"
A great day resulted from the Pouparao meet of Hie Poverty Bay Hounds on Friday last, when amongst a large held we were honored with the presence of Mr. Hassall, the master of the Hawke’s Bay Hounds, and bis daughter. With the disappearing of an overnight frost, scent was non-existent in the morning, but tilings began to get moving to a merry time about midday, and a brace of hares were bustled busily about hi the country behind Mr. Alex. Cameron’s homestead ; the second one —hard pressed —seeking a sanctuary beneath an empty bouse, which, however, proved insecure, as hounds got in and killed her. Drawing a long stretch of liver bank blank, bounds were trotted across to a small paddock of lucerne, from which a bare was quickly away, and a great run she gave. Going straight across tile Busbmere road in front of Mr, Cameron's house, she ran a large right-handed circle over heavy going and big fences that soon brought horses behind their bridles and checked by a patch of bush. Hitting off the hill over the stock road, they ran well, continuing the large semi-circle, and 1 re-crossed the Buslimere road by the railway line, and l ran at a good pace almost down to the river, where the quarry changed her tactics, and, turning short'to the left, they hunted her steadily to the back of the Matawhcro hotel, over the road, and away on to the MatawheroManutuke road near the Bridge ’hotel, where they checked. A cast across the road beyond a bunch of yearling cattle put them right, and, hunting a few chains slowly, their hare, which had squatted, got up under their noses, and away they went again, and ran hard over Whnkawhitnra to the Awa-
puni main road, where they were whipped off. pointing for Mr. Johson’s land, where we knew there were early lambing Hocks, ! This was a really good hunt, reflecting ’ great credit on the pack, which, • with varying scent throughout, proved that they can both hunt and “go,” as they j stuck to their line with unwavering ! tenacity throughout and met many foils on route. 1 After hunting, the large eoncuursc of followers were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Cameron at the homestead, I where their hearty welcome and lavish j hospitality put the best of finishing touches to a day of real enjoyment.
