BORER ATTACKS PINES.
GREEN TREES RIDDLED
CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday
The, ravages -of the wood borer came in for consideration at a meeting of the Selwyn Plantations Board, when the existence of the pest in an exceptional size xvas announced in trees on land at Ruapnna. Air. G. W. Ross xvrote stating that on his farm there xvas a belt of pine trees about 18 chains long and from throe lo four rows wide. Lately several had been blown down, and on investigating the cause he bad found that they were badly riddled with a- borer—a large- white insect about 2in long and ns thick as a man’s linger.
“I have seen them iri old dead logs here,” continued Mr. Ross, “and also in (lie back country. Tdo not know their correct- name. There are more trees here infested, and they are partly dying. 1 have soon the borer in the green-growing trees, pinus insignis.” The superintendent xvas instructed to inspect the trees and report on the matter.
