BEAUTIFYING THE TARUHERU.

(To the Editor of t.lio Herald.) Sir,—-My attention has been drawn to the magnificent opportunity that presents itself at this time, to beautify tho banks of the Tamil cm river. The question of reclaiming the unsightly mudflats on both, sides of the .river hue* frequently 'been discussed in the Borough Council, hut nothing could be done in this connection owing to the fact t'hni! every engineer who reported on the river, i.n connection with the horhor, was opjxised to any reclamation. Now that the river diversion has been definitely decided upon, the necessity for impounding the largo quantity of wafer would seem, to a layman, to have disappeared, a;nd that obstacle would cease fo exist.. At the preson.fi time piles have been driven at intervals between the Pee 1 street bridge and tho Rotunda. I don’t know what they are required for, but it appears quite feasible to reclaim the river out to the line of these piles. The diversion of the river will necessitate the removal of an immense quantity of spoil and if the Haflbor Board do not require it, it would probably ,be available for reclamation, purposes. I am. convinced that the period of Gisborne’s depression is almost over and l that our town will go ahead again. Now is the time to make a forward move. At the present time wo have acres of unsightly mudflats. These could be changed with very little expense into splendid playgrounds. Trees and grass Avoid'd replace the mud and once we had a' small, area, reclaimed I am convinced that it would be .such an clbject lesson to the citizens that we would not he satisfied until we had a beautified strip extending from the Rotunda; in Quay street to* the Roebuck road bridge, and 1 the present rather unsightlv Tariiheru would he turned into i beautiful river with deco water at all times. The n-lorv of Chrishchurch is the river Avon, flowing .right through the citv. The hanks have been beautified and receive attention. As a consequence the Avon is a tremendous asset to_ Christchurch. The value of all our rivers is lost owing to their neglected state. They can be made beautiful if those in power will only realize the position and get busy while the time is opportuno.— L am, etc.. G. C. MUNNS.
