TENNIS JOURNALISTS.
BARRED BY NEW RULE. (Australian bihi N.H Gable NEW YORK, Feb. 2.. WASHINGTON.' February 3. Tho executive of the United States Tennis Association is considering a. new rule prohibiting amateur players from writing newspaper articles under penalty of being declared professionals. The United States Lawn Tennis Association's annual meeting adopted an interpretation of the amateur rule whereilrrder players are barred from competition if they, write for financial profit. If is understood two or three of America's leading players are deriving incomes of between ten and twenty thousand dollars yearly by writing tennis. Tilden. who most strenuously opposed the amateur ruling, is known to have informed friends that he will not surrender writing under any circumstances, declaring that his profession is that of a journalist. Vincent Richards, after Tilden, is the widest contributor of tennis articles to periodicals. Richards, wjjp has just, been married, gave bis profession as a newspaper man upon bis license. The Association also adopted a ruling barring the use of spikes on turf courts, save at the discretion of the umpire.
