BIG FIELDS AND GOOD CONTESTS

The success attained at the inaugural meeting of the Ormond Athletic Sports Club, which" was held to-day, should be a happv augury for the club's future functions. As had been anticipated, there was a largo, attendance from all parts of the district, while the numbers were considerably swelled by people had journeyed from town by train and motor/car. Everything was conducive to a. successful day's gathering. The weather 1 was "perfect, while the grounds, • kindly lent for tho occasion _by Mr C Gordon were ideal,' "being delightfully situated on the banks of the Waipaoa river, and sheltered on nil sides bj craves of largo trees. The organisation f was complete in every detail, the grounds beirig well laid out and the numerous events being run off without delay and to. the 'satisfaction of competitors and public alike . The entries in all classes were, large, handicaps were good, and good starts were obtained, the result being many even contests and close finishes. As is usual at these gatherings the horse events attracted much attentipn. and the contests were particular!} good. Horses and riders were, in best farm and some exciting exhibitions were givem. Many of the athletic contest* provided equal interest, the 100 yards amateur, event being an, especially good race,,, tlie six finalists finishing within inches of one another. Picnicke.i.s were catered for, iiot water and milk being'available, and a- refreshment, tent was conducted on* the grounds.
