FIRE AT INVERCARGILL.
DAMAGE IN NEWS OFFICE
DESTRUCTION OF LINOTYPE MACHINES.
(Per Press Association.) 'I INVERCARGILL, this day. A serious fire occurred at the News office at 6.30 this morning, resulting in the total destruction of five linotype machines and bad damage to three others. Owing toi the fireproof construction, the, flames wore confined to the linotype room, the roof of which was destroyed. The fire was caused by the fusing of a rubber tubing supplying the gas for heating the metal. The damage is approximately £BOOO, and is covered in the South British office. It will be several weeks before tho machinery can be replaced. There was no publication to-day, nut arrangoments t! havo been made for a continuous issue from to-morrow.
