THE COMPETITIONS.
OPENED THIS AFTERNOON
The opening- of tho Gisborne Competitions Society’s season took place this afternoon in the Opera House. The attendance was gratifyingly large, and was an indication of the increasing interest which is being taken in the. competitions. This afternoon’s programme consisted of the soprano or mezzosoprano solo, Highland fling, recitation (girls 14 to 18), song (girls 15 to 18), and gentlemen’s recitation (own selection). An attractive programme has been arranged for this evening, when in addition to the finals ip the afternoon classes, there will also bo: Physical drill (boys), 'duet, in charaotor (under ,16), violin solo (tost), best three humorous stories, first soction combined ballet, tenor solo (tost), and the first of the 15 minute entertainments.
Tho competitions will be continued to-morrow and all next week.
