Brownlie .(supports), McXab (lock), and Irvine and. Kirkpa trick (hookers). P.B. RUGBY UNION. The weekly meeting of. the v Poverty Bav Rugby Union was held last evening', Mr. A. Billcliff presiding over a <iood attendance. Among the correspondence, was a letter from the Poverty Bay Referees' Association, conveying a resolution in the following terms:—"That it bo a recommendation to tho Rugby Union that an appointment committee be-set up consisting of five members to be constituted as follows: Two members of the.Referees' Association, one.member of tho Rugby Union, one member representing clubs or players, and one member of the public, who shall not be a flayer -or a member of the Rugby .Union." Mr. Edmundson commented that - the scheme appeared to be a good one, but the appointment of ..the. public's representative would present difficulty. He suggested that an appointment'committee from the Referee's Association would be able to do the work. Tho chairman remarked on the dissatisfaction there had been in the past concerning the appointments and the criticism that had been levelled by members of the public, the clubs, and even of the union itself ; at the; methods now used in making the apopintmente. Certain well-qualified referees were anathema to flfertain clubs, whereas-they were very popular with others. The appointment committee would open up a .way of so allotting the Teferees that the friction was reduced to a-minimum. He did not see any difficulty in the .way of the appointment of a member of the public. He suggested, however, that tho committee should ' comprise two members of the association, two from the union, and one from the public. Mr. Somervell believed that the appointment of such a committee would leave the Referees' Association nothing to do, since its weekly meetings were at presnt only productive of the appointments. '• ■

The motion was carried, and the committee elected aa follows:—Messrs O.R; Olsen and A. Wallace (Referees' Association), A. Billcliff and J. O'Neill (Rugby Union), and J. Mouat (public representative). Tho secretary (Mr. Curran) reported that tho negotiations for the formation of another sub-union, comprising Motu, Motuhora, and Matawai had been brought to a head at a conference held on Saturday between delegates from the northern end of tho Union district. The conference had been unanimously in favor of the proposal. The chairman and Messrs; Woodward and Primrose were appointed to draw up a set of rules for the new sub-union. A discussion on the subject of dates for representative matches took place, the chairman intimating that he had had a letter from tho East Coast Union suggesting a return match at Gisborne on

August 4. It was pointed out that that date would clash with a race day. After some discussion, tho match with 'East Coast was fixed for August 1 (Wednesday), while a second match; Waikohu sub-Union v. East Coast, was fixed for the following Saturday. The chairman submitted a report onhis conversations with the N;Z? Rugby Football Union while at Wellington. He had asked about the inclusion-; of Poverty Bay men in' the provincial-'and Island teams, and had beenrtold.that the Poverty Bay Union had not stated with sufficient definiteness the placing, of tho men recommended.. Mr- Stan. Dean had told him, concerning, the appointment of Poverty Bay referees for outside matches, that he had proposed one Gisborne man for the Hawko's Bay v. Wairarapa match, but could not give a definite assurance that this man was still a referee, and so the proposal was not taken up. The doubt about tho Hawkc's Bay v. Poverty Bay match being for the Ranfurly Shield had been removed by an assurance that tho shield would b© involved, and the P.B. Union would receive a jthird of the nett gate. The question as to whether the match to be played-by'the N.S.W: touring team at Napier was to be against a purely Hawko's Bay team or a combined team from Hawke's Bay, Poverty Bay and East Coast, had also been fettled. The Hawke's Bay Rugby Union had given him to understand that the team to oppose New South Wales i would mot include men from outside Hawke's, Bay, but he had communicated with' Mr. Dean, who had assured him again that tho team would be a combined-one. Tho N.Z.R.F.U. could not, however, agree to a quota of fivo men from each district, but advised that the selectors put out tho best team obtainable, as they would need it. The Union decided to writ© to the Hawke's Bay Union, suggesting that its selector visit Gisborne 'to ; see the Poverty Bay v. East Coast match, with a view to selecting a team. In respect to the suggestion that the Poverty Bay Union and the East Coast Union should amalgamate, Mr. Billcliff

said he had found the New Zealand Union very strong on the point, and he did. not see how they could get out of bowing to the parent body's wishes. It had been pointed out to him that the advantages of the amalgamation were obvious, while there were only the dignity of two bodies concerned standing against, the amalgamation. Mr. Ingram pointed out that the Poverty Bay Union had given a promise to the* East Coast Union that would necessitate their opposing the merger. The chairman agreed that the promise stood in the way, but held that the promise and the sentimental objection to the eclipse of tho Poveity Bay Rugby Union, were the only bars' to a satisfactory amalgamation. The subject was deferred for further discussion later.

A request for a return match between Poverty Bay junior representatives and Waikohu juniors, at Motuhora, was agreed to.

The unsatisfactory way in which the men selected for . representative teams were talcing their training was referrd to, and it was agreed that the men would have to take their training more seriously. The chairman remarked that he would rather see the tour abandoned than that the Union should send away "a lot of duds." If *a man did not take up his training in a proper manner, he would bo dropped. The selection committee submitted the following list of men, from which, the team to meet the Coast will bo picked:— Backs, Langlands. Woods, Wilson, Pol lock, Whaiteri, Kope, Mardon, Tureia, and Smith; forwards, J. Scott, Honey, Torrie, Whaiteri, Rico, Matthews, McRdowie, Williams, J. Heeney, and Hansen. Tho men .will meet for practice at the Reserve during the ■ weekend, as usual. In connction with the junior competition, it was decided that during tho third round, Rovers will play at Wae-renga-a-hika, on their homo ground, the other teams visiting them in turns. SOCCER. A meeting of the Management Committee of the Poveity Bay Football Association was held in the Labor Council Chambers last evening. Present: Messrs Warner, Capt. Holmes, Hill, Waaka, Crighton, Parker, Bury, and Herbt.' Hill. Correspondence was received from Auckland. The question of insuring the players was fully discussed, and it was decided to take a vote of the players in the Association, all replies to be' sent in by -next meeting. The matches for nest Saturday will be made known in Thursday's paper.
