ANDRE SKALSKI.
The final recital to be given in Gis,borne by Mr. Andre, Skalski, tho noted Polish pianist, will take place in the Opera House to-night. As a compliment to tho Gisborne Savage Club, and as a slight return for tho kindness extended to him by that body, Mr. Skalski has invited tho Savage -Club orchestra, under the cunductorship of Mr. Mainland Foster, to contribute two items, the selections being "Chanson du Soir" (as an overture), and also Brahm's "Hungarian Danco No 6." The programme to be presented by Mr. Skalski should suit all musical tastes, for it will comprise excerpts from the world masters and modern day composers. The opening numbers will be a Tausig arrangement of Bach's Toccata 'Fugue in D minor, which will be followed by two Chopin numbers, Fantasy in F minor (opus 49), and a Scherzo in B minor (opus 20). A Schumann bracket, "Romance F sharp major" (op. 28 No 2), "Soaring"( op. 12,'N0. 2), and "Dreaming," from "Childhood Scenes" (op. 15), will precede tho dainty Valse Scherzo (Moskowski), which wjll afford an opportunity of l contrasting tho work of tho present-day Polish composer with those of the masters. The first portion of the programme will conclude with Tausig's arrangement of Schubert's massive "Marche Militaire," in which the martial strain is brought out to the full. "Tarantella" (Liszt) will be followed by five lyric pieces by Grieg, with his distinctive sombreness. The American composer, MacDonajd, will be represented by a well-varied bracket, "The Eagle," "To A Water Lily," and "Witch's Dance"." The Finnish school will bo heard in Palmgren's "Night in May," and Merikanto's "Valse Lente," and the programme will conclude with two Liszt numbers, "The Nightingale," a Russian song by Alabrieff,' and Polonaise in E major. '
It is expected there will be a very huge attendance.
