OATH OF ALLEGIANCE.

WELLINGTON, this day. Some months ago the Government decided that the process requiring Britishborn persons to take tho oath of allegiance upon entering New Zealand should cease, but it was discovered that this was enforced by statute. Consequently (ho Immigration Restriction Amendment Bill is necessary. It was introduced by the Hon. Downio Stewart, and read a, first time yesterday. Hie main provision is that tho oath of allegiance need nofc ho taken by.a Britishhorn subjects, but tho law will still require a naturalised person to tako ,tho oath unless ho is under tho ago of 15, or is a. master or member of a crow of the vessel in which he arrives. Tho Customs authorities or police may, however, require any member of a crew to make the declaration as to nationality required of persons entering New Zealand. Failure to comply with these provisions renders an offender liable to 12 months' imprisonment, or a fine not exceeding £IOO.
