PRICE INVESTIGATION.

LOCAL SITTINGS OP TRIBUNAL. The Price Investigation Tribunal commenced the local sittings yesterday m the Borough Council Chambers, under Mr. M. >I. McCallum, and continued \ this, morning and this afternoon. The complaints before the board yesterday were m connection with the prices ' of meat and wheat, also butter. The meat question is one that intimately concerns this community, a large producing centre, and the complaint was that the fixed price of this commodity was* m excess of what the cost of production warranted. Cbnsiderable evidence was taken, and the finding of the board vtill m due course be reported to the Board of , Trade for action. Evidence of consumers and, producers was taken on the question of Bupply and retail price 'of wheat, the enquiry being unfinished at 2.30 p.m. to-day. The evidence of a further witness was to be taken this afternoon. An enquiry was made m regard to the price of bread sold over the counter, ; and delivered, the complaint being that the fixed prices, respectively 6d and 6|d, . were being exceeded. The finding of the board, after close investigation of the complaint, was that the prioes already fixed were reasonable, and that no change would be recommended. No supporting evidence was found for the complaint. The investigation of the meat trade m Qisborne has not yet reached a stage where a decision can be made, the evidence of two witnesses remaining to be taken. * Several other small complaints of excessive prices charged for articles by local storekeepers will be enquired into.
