PROPOSED PARK.

♦ THE KAITT HILL SITE). At the invitation of Mr. Geo. Darton, an inspection of the proposed Kaiti Hill Park was made yesterdav afternoon by the Mayor, Mr. Geo. Wildish, accompanied by the Town Clerk and Borough Engineer. The proposal is to utilise ithe. existing Borough reserve of 14 acres, which, extends from the Cook memorial up the face of the hi!l, and to acquire a further 10 acres, comprising the rough hilltop; extending up along the skyline. An investigation of the locality made by Mr. Darton discloses, herstates, that an easy road line can be obtained from Parau street right up to the reservoir site. The scheme entails' the expenditure of approximately £1000, including road formation and planting, whilst Lady ■ Carroll, who presented the Borough with two acres at. .the site of the Cook memorial, has intimated her willingness to assist in securing a further gift in the way of additional land. Mr. Darton points out that the scheme eliminates any land of a valuable nature suitable fbr. building sites, and. in fact, the , rough hilltop which it is proposed should be acquired as an extension of the existing Borough reserve, is u>nsuitable for any other purpose. Further than this, it is not proposed to interfere with the freezing works paddocks to the slightest extent. It has been decided to approach) Mr. Buxton, of Christchurch, who is regarded as,. the:. landscape expert of the Dcjminion, with a view to, obtaining a Teport from him as to the practicability of .the . scheme. Mr. Buxton is at present on a visit to this district in connection with the laying out of Mr. Rowley Murphy's property at Panikau, and he had a'.ready previously kindly intimated his willingness do provide the Returned Soldiers' Association with a scheme for Anzac Park (Score Point). Speaking to a Herald representative to-day, Mr. Darton said he was quite prepared' to stand or fall by Mar. Buxton's report on the scheme, "for he was confident he would advise that it was aai ideal site for one of the most beautiful park, in New Zealand. Questioned on the subject to-day, iuhe Mayor said h© was most agreeably surprised as a result of his visit. The road grade as . indicated by Mr. Darton was easier than the-hospital road, whilst the .view surpassed that from the hospital hill. However, he was waiting to hear the result of expert advice on the subject.
