POLITICAL RUMORS.

(Special to the Herald.)

- WELLINGTON, this day. According to a prominently-displayed article in the New Zealand Times seve 1 ral rumors of a. somewhat sensational character -have been, current in political circles since the return of the party leaders. The most interesting of these refers significantly. .to." the immediate retirement of Sir James Allen from the Cabinet. The, report has been made the subject of careful inquiry by a Times representative in well-iniqrmed circles, "and," says the Times, "though we' are hot in a position to make a definite announcement, it transpires that there is some sound foundation for the statement." It is also stated oh very good authority that ;Sir James : Allen's intention Was communicated to Mr. Massey while the latter was, cm his way from Canada, and was not wholly unexpected. In any case, it is certain the matter was under discussion in the inner councils of the Reform party before Mr. Massey had been in New Zealand many hours. Tlie newspaper suggests that Siri iv James Allen wishes .to .take this course, either because the'. Premier declines to appoint him High Commissioner, or that he' wishes to lead a| aie-w party. "In. all probability," adds the Times, "Sir James Allen will deny the report, but unless a. political miracle happens immediately, the retirement will be announced in due cpurse."
