SINGAPORE, RIOTS.
SYDNEY'S SERVICE APPRECIATED MELBOURNE, Aug, 2,-When H.M.S Sydney was on her homeward voyage serious riots occurred at Singapore and Penang, and the Sydney sent an armed landing party ashore to help to restore order. Letters received by Captain Cayley, commanding the Sydney, from MajorGeneral Ridout, commanding the troops of the Straits Settlements, and from Go. yerntnont House, Singapore, convey thanks for the Sydney's services. General Ridout refers, to the promptness with which the men were landed from the Sydney, on i7\we 19 and Jun c 20. The Navy Board has. also expressed gratification, at the good service given by the Sydney, and is partieujarlv appreciative of the cheerful and fine spirit shown by all concerned when suddenly called tu>on to delay their return home iv., ord#r fa -render public service.
