RAILWAY CUT.
CARRIAGE OF TIMBER ON THE I WEST COAST. (Per Press A^ociation.) WELLINGTON, this day. Replying to a statement that though the North Island railways have ceased to carry timber, the Greymouth railway service is kept extremely busy conveying millions of feet of red and white pine for shipment to Australia, Mr. Hemes said that the cut" had not been made so severe on the West Coast because then was plenty of coalithere, and timber was carried tfiere. One of the reasons for this was that m no case had timber t< be carried a long distance. The question whether - timber ought to be exported was one for decision by thr> Forestry Department. The Ministei pointed out, however, thnt ships bringing coal to New Zealand from Australimight want back loads of cargo, and timber was the only commodity m great bulk from this country to Australia.
