In his charge to the Grand Jury at the opening of the- Supreme Court criminal sessions, Mr. Justice Chapman mad© special reference to a case m which A father Avas charged with bringing about the death of his child. He said tho charge was justified by the evidence. The boy had contracted a bad habit. Instead of securing for the boy medical attention, the accused treated him personally, plunging him into cold Avater with considerable harshness, which caused the boy to run away and get into a. very dirty and. Aveak condition, and he eventually died from tetanuß.

WANGANUI, this day. Four men, J. Connor,, master of the lighter Morning Light; D. Rentie, J. Gibson, and J. E. Jackson, watersiders, were charged at the Magistrate's Court with being found m possession of dutiable goods concealed on the lighter. The goods were military blankets belonging to the Imperial Government, and came frosji the overseas steamer Armagh. Evidence was given by the quartermaster of the Armagh to the effect that during the night lightering operations m Wanganui roadstead he saw bales of blankets being dropped from the liner to the lighter. Investigation disclosed six bales of blankets on a lighter, covered with a tarpaulin. The information against Rentie was dismissed. The hearing m» the other three cases is proceeding. WELLINGTON", this day. This morning the Hon. W. D. S. MacDonaJd laid the foundation-stone of the new State fire insurance offices at the corner of Lamblon' Quay and. War ingTaylor streets.. The Minister said the cost of erecting the building would not be a charge on the consolidated fund or public Avorks fund', but would be- defrayed out of profits made by the Department since its inception fourteen years ago. The total accumulated funds at the end of 191& amounted to £214,000. DUNEDIN, this day. The 'inquest was resumed to-day, on the body of James Keay, who received fatal injuries during a boxing contest last Monday evening. The evidence showed that everything connected with the tournament was properly conducted, and that the blow itself was not sufficient to have caused death, which resulted from concussion as the result of deceased's head striking the padded floor. The coroner's verdict, was that deceased died from concussion of the bi'ain, due to a fall, the result of a blow dealt by James Aloysius Patrick McDonald, m a boxing contest; The coroner added that the contest had apparently been of a friendly character, carried out m a fair and honorable manner. He considered no blame whatever could be attributed to McDonald. It seemed .to be a sheer case of misfortune.

George Bell, aged 11, a son of R. P. Bell, iournalist, and Lawrence Glover, aged 12, a son of H. L. Glover, dentist, went for a walk yesterday afternoon to the cliffs beyond St. Clair. They failed U* return las+. evening. A search party discovered them this morning at the foot of a cliff, evjdently having fallen over, (reortre Bell was dead, but Lawrence Glover is not seriously injured.
