FALL OF THE FRANC.

ENCOURAGEMENT TO TRADE WITH GERMANY.

PARTS, May 23.~There is on 6 as. pect of the very serious rise m the rate of exchange against France that is particularly disquieting. While 100 franca are only worth 66 50 francs m London, and 67.40 francs m New -York, m Berlin they are worth 208.66 francs. Th c direct result of this is to render it far more advantageous tor the French merchant to trade with Germany than with the Allies •of Jn-ance. and more advantageous also for French business houses to buy readymade goods m Germany than to encourage French industries. , The logical remedy for this abnormal rise of the exchange against France would be to expoft large quantities of French goods. But France has as yet .nothing, to export, and to manufacture goods it is first necessary, to import raw materials, thu» running the risk off a further depreciation of the, franc. Meanwhile there is to prevent-Ger-man goods entering France, - and pencils, cutlery, thermometers, and photographic accessories imported from Germany have already appeared on the market.
