WALSH ISLAND

The report of the Royal Commission appointed to enquire into the working of the Government dockyard at Walsh J Island is strongly condemnatory. Ifj states ihat the capital was expended unprofitably m equipping jbhe establishment. The cost of. the work compared with that done elsewhere was excessive. Neither the estimates of cost of work nor charges provided for depreciation or interest on capital. Since its inception the establishment has been distinctly unproductive. The venture recommends a reduction to suitable dimensions to meet service needs by selling the establishment as a whole and erecting smaller works or a sale of portion, oi the works.
