(Elec. Tel. Copyright— Uflited Press Assn.l (Australian ana N.Z. Cable Association). LONDON, Aug. 7. Mr. Lloyd George, replying to Sir Donald MacLean.'s demand for a statement of .the Government's Irish policy, said that it is not to the credit of Britain that, aft-er one hundred years of British rule, we have not reconciled Ireland to partnership. The rule of force could not be the last word. The Government would submit a scheme to the Commons at the earliest moment, but not before the recess. Everyone «said something must be done.
"I am anxiously looking for any proposals," continued the Prime Minister, "and invite Sir Donald Mac Lean to submit one. The Times newspaper has proposed a great scheme. Unfortunately it is a. scheme that every part of -Ireland would condemn. The Government will not shirk its responsibilities, but meanWhile order must be maintained m Ireland." ,
